The local government of Tipo-Tipo in Basilan reported on Tuesday that the municipality has come under attack by armed men allegedly supported by members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
In an advisory posted on its official Facebook page, the Tipo-Tipo LGU announced the suspension of all classes, government operations, and economic activities until further notice, citing the volatile security situation.
“Tipo-Tipo under siege by lawless elements backed by MILF,” the post read. “All classes and government work are cancelled until further notice. Everyone is advised to stay safe and vigilant. Pray for Tipo-Tipo.”
MILF Peace Implementing Panel chairperson Mohagher Iqbal has yet to state as of posting time.
The Philippine Army confirmed that an incident occurred in Tipo-Tipo and said it is still verifying details with its units on the ground.
“We assure the public that the Philippine Army is on top of the situation. Our troops have been deployed to secure the area and ensure the safety of the residents,” said Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala.
He added that the military is maintaining close coordination with the local government and other security agencies “to restore normalcy and address the needs of the affected communities.”
