Judge Frank Caprio, considered the “nicest judge in the world,” has died at the age of 88 due to pancreatic cancer.
According to an official statement on his Facebook page, Caprio passed away peacefully after a long and enduring battle with the disease.
Caprio was known for his kindness, humility, and belief in the goodness of every person, and was also known for the program “Caught in Providence,” where videos of his humane treatment of those who sought refuge in the court went viral.
Carpio also became a model of compassion and justice, something he likened to his Italian immigrant parents.
In December 2023, Caprio shared his cancer diagnosis on social media and asked for prayers from the public. However, in May 2024, he completed his radiation treatment but had a setback and was recently hospitalized again.
Caprio served as a municipal court judge in Providence, Rhode Island from 1985 to 2023. In addition to being a judge, he was also a teacher, father, grandfather, and good friend.
A few months before his death, he published the book Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge, in which he shared important lessons about compassion and understanding others.
