The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the eruption of Kanlaon volcano amid widespread rains in the Visayas, caused by typhoon Tino.

Based on a report released by Phivolcs, the volcano again registered up to five volcanic earthquakes during the height of the rains.

It also emitted smoke 200 meters high and eventually landed on the southern side of the volcano, while some parts of it continue to show signs of eruption.

The volcano has also emitted up to 2245 tons of sulfur in recent days.

Along with the continuous rains in the area, PHIVOLCS is not ruling out the possibility of a sudden eruption or phreatic explosion.

Furthermore, the agency considers a magma eruption possible.

Yesterday (Nov. 3), Phivolcs first warned of the possibility of a lahar flow due to heavy rains caused by the typhoon.

Phivolcs says this can happen on the volcano’s slopes and in communities with streams, canals, etc. that carry water and lahar.
