South Korea’s military has begun removing loudspeakers located along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the border with North Korea, the country’s Department of Defense said.

The loudspeakers were previously used to play loud music and broadcast news about the outside world as part of the country’s campaign to provide information against the tight control of the media by Kim Jong-un’s government.

The move was reportedly ordered by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to ease tensions between the two countries. However, North Korea has strongly denied any contact with the new South Korean president.

Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong-un’s sister, said they had no interest in any policy or proposal from Seoul and stressed that inter-Korean relations are permanent and irreversible.

Following this, the South Korean military assured that the removal of the loudspeakers would not affect their security preparations.
